Eagles put out Red Bay in sub-regional

J.R. Tidwell/FCT Red Bay head coach Greg Cash gives team instructions from the sideline in a game earlier this season.

RED BAY— Early and often it seemed the Red Bay Tigers took perfect shots only to watch the ball go in and out of the rim. That was the story of the game for Greg Cash’s team as they fell to the Cold Springs Eagles 61-47 in sub-region play on Saturday night.

“We just couldn’t get shots to fall,” Cash said. “We had good looks at the basket. The shots seemed to be on target. They just didn’t go in.”

Defensively, Red Bay executed their game plan, taking Cold Springs leading scorer Chase Elliott out of the game. Elliott, who was averaging 28 points per game, was held to 12 points on Saturday night.

“We did what we wanted to against their best player [Elliott]. He got in foul trouble early but we just couldn’t take advantage of it,” Cash said.  “They are a very good basketball team.”

The game was tight for just about a minute and half into the second quarter. Red Bay led 9-8.  From there it was all Cold Springs. They closed out the remaining six and a half minutes of the second quarter with a 14-3 run and led Red Bay 22-12 at the half.

The Eagles stayed on their roll coming out of the locker room in the second half, outscoring Red Bay 21-10 in the third quarter to lead 43-22.

Red Bay was able to cut into Cold Springs lead midway into the fourth quarter when Austin Malone hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 49-38. That was as close as the Tigers would get, however.

Malone led Red Bay with 13 points.

Other scorers for Red Bay were Michael Ramirez (9), Brett McDowell (9), Austin Sparks (5), Ben Hubbard (4), Barry Reach (3), Matt Montgomery (2) and Cole Rooker (2).
