Winston couple indicted on sex abuse charges

A Winston County man accused of having sex with a minor, and his wife, who is accused of knowing about the abuse but doing nothing to stop it, were indicted by the January grand jury on sexually-related charges, officials said.
Dan Busby, Jr., 58, 173 Kidds Rd., Lot 19, Haleyville, was indicted for first-degree rape, second-degree rape, second-degree sodomy, electronic solicitation of a minor and another sexually-related charge.
Kristy Anne Busby, 34, with the same address, was indicted for second-degree rape, second-degree sodomy and another sexually-related charge.
According to reports, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation in September after allegations surfaced of an inappropriate relationship between an underage female victim and Dan Busby.
Officers indicated the victim told a friend about the abuse and the friend contacted authorities.
The alleged sexual abuse that took place in Franklin County happened while the couple lived in the East Franklin community for a short period of time, officials said, but other abuse is alleged to have taken place in neighboring counties.
Rushing said Dan Busby is accused of committing the actual sexual abuse while Kristy Busby is being charged as a co-conspirator for knowing about the abuse and refusing to report it.
Rushing said the Busbys’ cases will be set for arraignment on March 29.
