My taste in movies is quite random

I am a bit of a movie fan. I can’t tell you the name of the set designer on every Paul Newman and Jimmy Stewart movie or anything like that, but I enjoy watching movies on the big screen.

I haven’t got to see as many movies lately due to my new job, but I have a DVR now, so that problem isn’t as bas as it could be.

My actual problem is the way I critique some movies while dismissing all of the flaws of others.

I like action films, and I have sat through more plotless movies with multiple scenes of random gunfire than I care to imagine.

When I’m watching a movie that seeks to be serious though, I will point out every major flaw I see.

I also tend to figure films out well before the end. If I don’t see the ending of a motion picture coming before it gets to me, it was a good film in my estimation.

Take the Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell film “Surrogates” for instance. I saw it with a group of friends in a Florence theater, and within 15 minutes of the start of the film I had the ending pegged.

The foreign horror film “High Tension” starring Cecile de France, on the other hand, threw me for a complete loop at the climax of the movie.

I have random tastes in films, but I tend to like period pieces (just not dramas), action thrillers and especially comedies, but the cerebral tales I watch sometimes clash with the mindless action films I also see.

I don’t know that I have a clear favorite genre, but I tend to watch comedies more than any other film type.

I like slapstick, dry British wit, buddy comedies and several others.

On a side note, if you like comedies like me, check out some British films like “Pirate Radio,” “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz” and “Wild Target.” Monty Python fans should especially love these.

You pretty much can’t go wrong with anything involving Nick Frost, Simon Pegg and most of all Bill Nighy.

The one genre I can’t stand above all else is the chick flick.

I know I’m not supposed to like it, but they seem to mock me with how awful they are.

I can literally watch — against my will — a trailer for a chick movie and tell you exactly what happens in it without ever setting foot in the theater.
