Red Devils fall to Phillips 74-48

VINA — What appeared to be a rout at the end of the first quarter turned into a shootout for Vina, but the Red Devils were unable to overcome the early deficit in their 74-48 loss to Phillips.

Vina’s Cody Renfrow tied the game 8-8 early with an 8-yard touchdown run and a successful 2-point conversion, but Phillips scored 20 unanswered points to pull ahead 28-8 entering the second quarter.

Phillips added three more touchdowns in the second. Vina’s Andrew Hester and Renfrow both added rushing touchdowns while Nick Schmittou hit Clay Pierce for a 32-yard touchdown pass to cut the Phillips lead to 50-28 by halftime.

Pierce scored on a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown to pull the Red Devils (0-6, 0-4) within 16 points, but Phillips added two more scores before Vina could reach the end zone again. Schmittou found Tyler Hammock for a 10-yard touchdown pass, making the score 66-42 at the end of the third quarter.

Phillips added another score late in the fourth and Vina’s Ethan Pharr scored on a 39-yard run in the final minute.

Three Vina players rushed for more than 100 yards Friday night. Hester finished the game with 140 rushing yards, Renfrow had 121 yards and Pharr had 107 yards.
