Track athletes find success at state meets

Several local athletes traveled to the state track meet last week and five athletes returned with medals in their events.

Belgreen’s Katelin Barber is the only athlete to win an event, claiming the 100-meter title with a time of 12.49 seconds. She also finished third in the 200-meters.

Vina’s Candice Mills finished second in the triple jump. She was also seventh in the high jump.

Will Hester, also of Belgreen, finished second in the 400-meters and sixth in the 800-meters while Emily Davidson finished third in the 1,600-meters.

Vina picked up a third place finish in the 4×800-meter relay.

Russellville’s Robert Terrell claimed a pair of third-place finishes in shot put and discus throw. He was the only Golden Tiger to earn points during the Class 5A State Track Meet, helping Russellville to finish 21st with 12 points.

The Belgreen girls finished the highest in the team standings with 31 points, which was good enough for eighth place. Vina finished third with 25 points and Tharptown finished 24th with two points.

In boys team standings, Belgreen and Vina finished tied for 13th place with 11 points each.

Other results:

Vina’s Channing Haithcock was fifth in the discus throw and 13th in the shot put.

Tharptown’s Kelsey Borden finished seventh in the discus throw while Vina’s Shelby Boyd finished 19th.

Vina’s Claudia Townsend was seventh in the girls long jump and 10th in the triple jump while Kylie Murray was ninth in the triple jump.

Patrick White, of Vina, finished fifth in the boys long jump, sixth in the high jump and 12th in the triple jump.

Belgreen’s Sara McMahan was eighth in the javelin throw.

Belgreen’s Mollie Hester was 12th and Alex Winstead was 18th in the 400-meters while Vina’s Morgan Humphries finished 13th in the same event.

Humphries also finished fifth in the 800-meters while Winstead finished eighth. Belgreen’s Brittany Simmons was 20th in the 800-meters.

Belgreen’s Brian Vance as ninth in the 110-meter hurdles while Vina’s Fallyn Shotts was 13th in the girls 300-meter hurdles. Shotts was also 14th in the 1,600-meters while teammate Heather Thorn was eighth. Thorn also finished seventh in the 3,200-meters.

Vina’s Talon Vallejo was 16th in the 800-meters, 12th in the 1,600-meters and 15th in the 3,200-meters.

Tharptown’s Eddy Argueta was 16th in the 1,600-meters while teammate Max Nolen was 17th.

The Belgreen girls 4×400-meter relay team finished sixth and the Vina team finished 11th. Belgreen’s 4×800-meter relay team finished fifth.

The Belgreen boys 4×400-meter relay team was 11th while Vina finished 17th. Tharptown’s 4×800-meter relay team finished ninth.

Phil Campbell’s Dalton Newell was 21st in the Class 2A boys 400-meter dash.

Russellville’s Tyler Boyd was ninth in the long jump and 19th in the triple jump while Devan Parker was 20th in the javelin throw.
