Belgreen, Red Bay ranked
Two local basketball teams have been rewarded for good play with appearances in the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association poll released Thursday.
The Belgreen boys, who have been ranked since the start of the season, are currently sixth in the Class 1A poll.
The Bulldogs were as high as fifth, but a loss to Carbon Hill in the finals of the Fayette Lions Club Tournament is the reason Belgreen — 13-2 overall and 6-0 in area play at the time of the poll — dropped a spot.
Belgreen played Tharptown Friday night with an opportunity to clinch the Class 1A, Area 13 regular season title. That game concluded too late to be included in today’s edition of the Franklin County Times.
The other team in the polls is the Red Bay girls. The Lady Tigers used an impressive performance at the Northwest Alabama Girls Christmas Tournament to move seventh in the Class 2A poll.
Red Bay moved one step closer to wrapping up the Class 2A, Area 12 regular season title Tuesday night with a win at Phil Campbell.
The Lady Tigers can finish their area schedule with an undefeated record if they beat Sulligent on the road Jan. 11.
