Two teens charged in church burglary

Two local teens are in custody for their involvement in the vandalism of a Russellville church.

Juan Steven Martinez, 18, 800 Sockwell Avenue, Apt. 4, Russellville, has been charged with first-degree theft of property, first-degree receiving stolen property and third-degree burglary, Russellville Police Chief Chris Hargett said.

He added that a 17-year-old juvenile was also arrested for his involvement in the incident.

According to Hargett, officers received a report on Dec. 14 that electronic equipment, cameras, musical equipment, instruments and computers had been stolen from Bethania Church in Russellville.

The report also stated that there was extensive damage throughout the building, especially around the door frames where doors had been kicked open and in the kitchen where eggs had been thrown.

During the course of the investigation, officers were able to develop Martinez and the juvenile as suspects based on information they received from church members.

Martinez was picked up about 10 a.m. Monday on an unrelated warrant, authorities said.

Authorities said that when Martinez was questioned about the incident at the church, he admitted his involvement and said he was assisted by the juvenile.

Most of the church’s stolen property was recovered at the juvenile’s residence.

“The Hispanic community was instrumental in our department developing information that led to the arrests in this case,” Hargett said.

“We are very appreciative of their help, especially the congregation at Bethania Church.”

At press time, Martinez was still in custody at the Russellville City Jail without bail.

After a 72-hour hearing Monday afternoon, it was determined that the juvenile would also remain in the custody of the juvenile court system.
