Bobcats open on road at Cold Springs

PHIL CAMPBELL — One week after an impressive win against Haleyville in the fall jamboree game the Phil Campbell football team will open its season Friday night at Cold Springs.

Coach Bo Culver said he has not had an opportunity to see Cold Springs play because he was unable to swap game film with the Eagles’ coach. He said although he has not seen game film, he has been able to find out a little about Cold Springs.

“They run a double wing and they have a lot of key guys returning,” Culver said. “They are expected to be an improved team.”

The Eagles were 0-10 last season and scored only 4.7 points per game. The Cold Springs defense gave up an average of 31.3 points per game.

The Bobcats’ physical style of play — which helped wear down Haleyville and allow Phil Campbell to score 17 points in the closing minutes of the first half against the Lions — could benefit Phil Campbell this week.

“We were very physical (against Haleyville). It took us a possession or two to get in the mix and play the style we wanted to play,” Culver said. “We want to be a team that will out physical our opponents.”

Culver said that was a great thing to take from the Haleyville game, but there were also several areas in which the Bobcats need to improve. The biggest concern for Culver is cutting down on mental mistakes.

This will be the first meeting between these two programs.
