Lady Golden Tigers set to host area tournament

By Staff
The Russellville varsity girls basketball team began the season with quite a bit of promise and an impressive winning streak.
Since last Monday the Lady Golden Tigers have lost to Deshler once and J.O. Johnson twice and have fallen out of the Class 5A state rankings.
Russellville's only win during that span was a 76-55 victory at home against Athens last Thursday. With the win the Lady Golden Tigers forced a tie with Athens for first place in the area.
Both squads had identical 5-1 records in area play and the regular-season winner had to be determined by a coin toss.
Russellville won the toss and will host the Class 5A, Area 15 Tournament beginning Feb. 4.
The first game will feature second-seeded Athens against third-seeded Hartselle at 6 p.m. Russellville will play fourth-seeded Muscle Shoals at 7:30 p.m.
The winners of that game will meet Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. to determine the area champion. The winner of the area tournament will host a sub-regional game while the runner-up will travel during the sub-regional round of the playoffs.
Russellville coach James Bostick said his team has not lost what has worked earlier in the season during the past week. He said the players are not playing as hard as they should the entire game.
"We were ahead in the last minute (Monday night against Johnson) but we let up," Bostick said. "We have to get out and play 32 minutes of ball like we did against Athens."
