Tigers top Lexington in tennis

The Red Bay boys tennis team improved to 3-0 in section play and 4-1 overall this week with a 7-2 win against Lexington and a 7-2 win against Sheffield while the Lady Tigers lost to Lexington 9-0 and Sheffield 7-2 to fall to 0-4 on the season.
Against Lexington, the boys team won each of the singles matches before dropping tow of three doubles matches.
Toby Gray defeated Heath Thompson 8-1; Chris Funderburk knocked off Fowler Joiner 8-5; John Thigpen beat Drew Springer 8-5; Kirk Armstrong topped Cavan Holley 8-3; Justin Roberts beat Zac Sinyard 8-5 and Roman Lynch defeated Issac Joiner 8-6.
In doubles action, the team of Gray and Armstrong beat Thompson and Springer 8-4. The team of Thigpen and Lynch fell to Joiner and Sinyard 9-8 and the team of Funderburk and Roberts lost to Springer and Cox 8-5.
In singles action against Sheffield Gray defeated Austin Pace 8-5; Thigpen beat Sklan Rikard 8-1; Armstrong knocked off Brett Alsbrooks 8-4; Roberts topped Luke Gasgue 9-7; Lynch beat Nick Alexander and Funderburk lost by default.
Gray and Armstrong knocked off Pace and Rikard 8-5 in doubles while Thigpen and Lynch beat Alsbrooks and Hardwick 8-2. The only Red Bay doubles team to lose was Roberts and Funderburk, who lost by default.
In girls action against Lexington, Caitlin Childers fell to Callie Howard 8-2; Morgan Duncan lost to Alyssa Parker 8-1; Britan Bolding was shut out by Kayla Ritter 8-0; Shantell Nichols lost to Courtney Michael 8-0; Morgan McKinney lost to Anna Phillips 8-0 and Diedra Shewbart fell to Kayley Littrell 8-0.
In doubles play, the team of Childers and Duncan lost to Howard and Ritter 8-1; Nealea McKinney and Bolding lost to Phillips and Phillips 8-0 and Morgan McKinney and Nichols lost to Michael and Littrell 8-0.
The Lady Tigers fared a little better against Sheffield as Childers defeated Haley Pickens 8-2 and Duncan beat Claire Burns 8-3 in singles play.
Sheffield turned the tables as Arode Pwems knocked off Nichols 8-6 and Caitly Haddock topped Shelby Childers 8-1. The Lady Tigers also lost two singles matches by default.
Sheffield swept the doubles matches with the team of Pickens and Burns beating Caitlin Childers and Duncan 10-8 and Owens and Haddock beating Nichols and Shelby Childers 8-3. Red Bay lost the third doubles match by default.
