Abernathy named to All-Star squad
MONTGOMERY – Russellville senior running back Mike Abernathy has been named to the Alabama roster for the 21st annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Football Classic Dec. 17 in Mobile.
Abernathy, who has rushed for 1,251 yards and 15 touchdowns for the No. 8 Golden Tigers, was among 37 high school players named to the roster, which also includes Colbert Heights receiver Daniel Berry and Florence offensive lineman Carson Anderson.
Belgreen VG, VB win season opener
THARPTOWN – The Belgreen varsity teams downed Tharptown last Friday in the season opener for both schools.
The Belgreen varsity girls, led by Deborah Billingham's 17 points, trailed by two points after the first quarter and led only 22-20 at hafltime, but the Lady Bulldogs outscored Tharptown 21-7 in the final period to win 56-38.
Chelsea McCluskey led Tharptown with 16 points, and Holly Hines added 13. Belgreen had seven players score at least four points.
The Belgreen varsity boys, led by Shane Hargett's 18 points, beat Tharptown 68-50 after breaking open a close game with a 22-7 run in the second quarter.
Trevor Hallmark led Tharptown with 16 points, and Devin Lawson added eight. Ten different players scored for the Bulldgos.
Belgreen plays at Phil Campbell Nov. 15 and hosts Tharptown Nov. 16.
RHS bonfire and pep rally
November 15
The Russellville High School varsity cheerleaders will hold a bonfire and pep rally for the Russellville-Briarwood Christian game on Thursday, November 15 at 6 p.m. The event will be held behind the RHS football stadium and tennis courts.
Youth basketball registration
November 17
The Russellville Parks and Recreation department is holding registration for youth basketball until Nov. 17. The progra is for boys and girls ages 6-18 years old, and the age control date is September 1, 2007. Cost is $35 per player, or $60 fwo players. The late registration deadline is November 19-24, with a $5 late fee. For more information, contact the department at 332-8770.
Dam-Bridge Run
November 17
FLORENCE – The third annual Dam-Bridge Run 10K race will be held Saturday, November 17 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Marriott Shoals Conference Center. The certified course crosses the Tennessee River on the historic Wilson Dam, and returns across the Patton Island Bridge. Each river crossing is approximately 0.8 miles. Registration price is $20. PC-Belgreen JV game changed
