Fall brings Barrels of Fun'

By Staff
Fall is just around the corner, and that makes me begin to think about the fair. That's right, the Queen City Fair will be Sept. 27nOct. 3 at the Lauderdale County Agri-Center.
For the second year, the Queen City Fair will sponsor the "Barrels of Fun" contest in which local school groups, youth groups, or youth organizations can decorate a barrel around the theme "Life in Lauderdale County." Cash awards will be given for the first, second and third place winners.
The "Barrels of Fun" contest is a great way to promote the opportunities Lauderdale County has to offer, promote your youth group, and have fun being creative. Barrels will be due by noon Sept. 27. For more information about this event, call me at 482-9764.
I have another opportunity for youth ages 10 to 18, and that is a Public Speaking Workshop. Don't run with fear when you hear the words
Public speaking can be a lot of fun, and if you don't believe me, just ask two of our 4-H'ers Patrick Swearingen and Lydia Burns, who were selected to represent Mississippi at the Mid South Fair in Memphis later this month.
So, if you want to improve your public speaking skills, consider attending our 4-H Public Speaking Workshop on Thursday from 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. at the 4-H Office. Camille Young, a communications major and former 4-H member, will teach participants the secrets to preparing and presenting a great speech. The workshop is free. To register, call the Lauderdale County Extension Service by Sept. 15.
And don't forget…
The 4-H Pet Club will meet Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the Lauderdale County Detention Center Training Room. If you are between 8 and 18 and want to learn more about pets, this club is for you.
The Lauderdale County 4-H Junior Council will meet Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the 4-H Office. This will be the first meeting of the new 4-H year and officers will be elected.
