Philadelphia captures tourney title

LAUREL Philadelphia whipped Yazoo City 11-1 to win the Dixie Youth Baseball nine-year-old State Tournament on Thursday at the Sportsplex.
The champions scored in every inning in the victory. Philly scored two runs in the first, one in the second, three in the third and fourth innings and ended the contest with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The game was called due to the 10-run rule.
Yazoo City scored a single run in the fourth inning.
J. R. Moore went the distance on the mound to pick up the win, while Tre Richardson and Dalton Burton pitched for Yazoo City.
Chase McNair, J.C. Bates, Turner Rhodes, John Trell Pickens and Caleb Crenshaw had hits for the winners. Bates slugged two singles, and Pickens tripled in the fifth and scored the final run of the tournament.
Austin Stoval and Justin Barnes led Yazoo City with a single each.
Philadelphia defeated Amory (11-6), Hattiesburg (4-3), Laurel (12-2), Pascagoula (9-7) and Yazoo City to win the title. The team's only loss was to Yazoo City (14-23) on Tuesday night.
Yazoo City lost to Laurel (11-10) and Philly. It picked up wins over Magee (5-1), Hattiesburg (6-3) and Philadelphia to finish second.
There is no World Series for the nine-year-old age group.
