Excellence in education

Rebecca McCarty of Meridian, a business administration major, recently received four prestigious awards at the Mississippi College in Clinton Honors Day Convocation. She was one of four students named to the Hall of Fame for 2003-2004, the highest award given to a graduating student of MC.
McCarty is the daughter of Van and Robin McCarty of Meridian. A presidential scholarship recipient, she is a president's list scholar. She is a member of the Cap and Gown chapter of mortar board, she serves on the service committee and is service chairman for Omicron Delta Kappa. Her other honor society memberships include Delta Mu Delta and Alpha Lambda Delta. As a freshman, she was selected Mortar board freshman of the year.
McCarty also received the Perry Academic Award. This award was established by Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Perry for the primary purpose of recognizing scholastic achievement at Mississippi College. Seven students each year from various disciplines are given this award. The student must also exhibit qualities of leadership, citizenship, creative ability, activities and moral character.
She also received the Wall Street Journal Award, an award given to the best all around senior majoring in the School of Business, based on scholarship and the Alpha Lambda Delta Book Award. This award is presented each year to the Alpha Lambda Delta graduating seniors who have maintained the highest grade point average. This year's honorees are graduating with a 4.0 average.
The following students from the Meridian and surrounding areas have been inducted as members in the Mississippi State University chapter of Phi Kappa Phi. The students include: Jonathan R. Jackson, Conehatta; Benjamin J. Terry, Kosciusko; Ben A. Hubbard, Louisville; Elizabeth A. Edwards, Mary K. Gambill, Clinton B. Hales III, Claire Maranto, Michael L. Mayerhoff, David Palmer, Sally L. Stacey, Joel H. Stinson, Erica J. Stokes and Deanna L. Wilson, all of Meridian; and Elizabeth A. Johnson of Philadelphia.
The U.S. Achievement Academy announced that Holly Herrington of Collinsville has been named a U.S. National Award Winner in foreign language and has been named an All-American Scholar.
Herrington attends West Lauderdale High School. She is the daughter, Tony Herrington and Wanda Herrington of Collinsville. She is the granddaughter of Peggy Wood and Jimmy Wood of Meridian, and the late Burkett Herrington and Jo Herrington of Collinsville.
