    Local prep runners meet at state cross-country meet

    Several area teams and athletes fared well in the MHSAA State Cross-Country Meet at Mississippi College's Choctaw Trails at Clinton Saturday. The boys ran 5,000 meters, while girls competed on a 4,000-meter course.
    Class 3A Boys
    Newton County came in third place, while West Lauderdale placed seventh. Corinth took first place.
    Newton County's Brandon LaBue was third overall with a time of 17:52.51. Micah Lanier was ninth with a time of 18:35.73. Josh Cook was 22nd at 19:45.21. Completing the top five Cougars were Noah Cook (20:49.10) and Colby Ezell (22:37.18).
    Dustin Pounders led West with a time of 20:05.62 which was good for 26th place. Ryan Hill was 29th at 20:29.00. Also in the West top five were Tony Jones (20:59.33), Jay Stoddard (21:04.95), and Riley Walton (23:40.29).
    Class 3A Girls
    West Lauderdale placed third with Haley Wilson finishing 11th at 17:57.58 and Kacy Covert coming in 12th at 17:58.93. Sara Birmingham was 19th at 18:43.07. Completing the top five Lady Knights were Rachel Reeves (19:20.16) and Vanessa Uhl (19:26.09).
    Corinth was the champion.
    Newton County's Maggie McDill was 20th with a time of 18:56.85.
    Class 2A Boys
    St. Andrew's finished first with Clarkdale placing fifth, Newton sixth, and Philadelphia seventh.
    Clarkdale's Chris Martin was fourth overall with a time of 18:32.57. Curtis Woods was 22nd at 20:59.91. Zach Dietrich (22:25.84), Tanner Cline (22:28.06), and Wil Caraway (25:18.62) completed Clarkdale's top finishers.
    Newton was led by Patrick Tillman as his time of 21:27.16 was good for 29th place. Justin Body (24:06.01), Matthew Evans (24:08.16), and Germany Robinson (27:08.05), were the top Tigers.
    Corey Sharp led Philadelphia as his 19:38.52 was good for 12th place. Andrew Alford (23:08.23), Thomas Webb (27:08.05), and Taylor McClanahan (27:08.05), were the top Tornadoes.
    Class 2A Girls
    Newton came in fourth, while St. Andrew's captured the championship. Tiara Buckley led the Lady Tigers with a time of 19:08.16 which was good for 14th. Na'Chandra Evans was 18th with a time of 20:28.23. Felicia Fielder (21:42.39), Tynashaka Chapman (21:48.51), and Tamesha Curry (22:49.90) completed Newton's participants.
    Clarkdale's Jessica Luman was 11th with a time of 18:22.48. Erin Williams was 27th, turning in a time of 22:49.90.
    Philadelphia's Simone Boler was 29th with a time of 22:49.90, while teammate Shan Seales was 30th, also with a 22:49.90 time.
    Class 1A Girls
    Nanih Waiya placed fifth and Union came in ninth. Myrtle took first place.
    Shandrica Hunt of Nanih Waiya was 15th overall with a time of 18:16.21. Heather Steele was 25th with a time of 19:01.31.
    Anna Rouse led Union with a time of 19:39.22 which was good for 31st place.
    Class 1A Boys
    East Union took first place with Nanih Waiya placing eighth. Jonathan Rogers led the Warriors as his time of 21:27.31 was good for 38th.
    Addison Griffis of Union was 27th with a time of 20:11.57.
    Class 5A Girls
    Meridian was 17th. Tupelo took first place.
    Anna Allred placed 71st to lead Meridian with a time of 20:15.98. Keshia Anderson (21:08.72), Karen Allred (21:29.59), Tori Boyken (21:44.14), and Jessica Thompson (21:49.68) completed the Lady Wildcats top five finishers.
    Class 4A Girls
    Pearl won the championship with Northeast Lauderdale placing sixth, Wayne County 11th, and Quitman 14th.
    Teshae Portis led Northeast as her time of 17:43.65 was good for 23rd. Jessica Arroyo was 30th with a time of 17:50.96. Carlisha Barfield placed 35th, turning in a 18:02.36. Completing the top five Lady Trojans were Whitney Ware (18:06.10) and Brittany Bostick (20:19.42).
    Lauren Pittman led Wayne County with a time of 18:36.69. Brittany Davis had a time of 19:02.88. Haley Mills (19:06.88), Deanna Powe (19:24.00), and Ratassia Worsham (19:56.55) completed the Lady War Eagles top five finishers.
    Danesha Williams led Quitman with a time of 19:54.52. Ashley Doherty had a time of 19:59.24. Holly Comans clocked in at 22:59.89, while Jenny Fleming had a 23:35.68. Samantha Evans turned in a 24:37.86.
    Class 4A Boys
    Pearl won the championship, while Northeast Lauderdale finished 12th. Antonio Seaton led the Trojans with a time of 19:41.34, good for 46th place. Brock Barham was 56th with a time of 20:11.72. Completing the top five Trojans were Hendrick Jefferson (20:54.19), Jeremy Graham (22:19.34), and Colin Doherty (22:49.00).
    Slade Gardner led Wayne County with a time of 21:18.21. Adam Nton had a time of 23:40.76.
    Jeremy Leggett led Quitman with a time of 21:23.08. James Phillips had a time of 22:42.44. Nick Gunning was clocked at 23:03.65.
    Class 5A Boys
    Meridian didn't have enough entrants for a team score. Jonathan Burns placed 100th with a time of 21:25.79. Gordon Harmon was No. 112 with a time of 22:21.86.
    Tupelo placed first.
