Former U.S. Rep. G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery is the honorary walk chairman for the 2003 Meridian Walk for Diabetes to be held Oct. 12.
During a news conference on Monday, Montgomery said he has had family members who have battled the disease and that he is willing to do whatever he can to fight diabetes.
The walk, which will be held at Bonita Lakes Park, will raise money for the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi for research and education about the disease.
Dawn Chappell, community development coordinator for the local east central chapter of the foundation, said registration for the walk will be held at 1 p.m. and that the walk will begin at 2 p.m.
She said there will be free hot dogs and soft drinks for walkers.
Other sponsors involved in the event include Rush Foundation Hospital, which is a statewide sponsor as well as a local supporter of the walk. Chappell said BankPlus is the Meridian presenting sponsor for this year's event. She said other corporate sponsors include the Eye Clinic of Meridian, Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center, Meridian Rotary Club, Riley Hospital and Structural Steel.
