Angero, Carle leading at Northwood

Dan Angero and Jimmy Carle continued to produce some fireworks of their own on the golf course in the second day of the Bill Davis Memorial Fourth of July Tournament on Friday.
As the format of the 96-team tournament switched to match play, Angero and Carle, who teamed up to shoot a first-day low 8-under-par 63, made quick work of their opponents in the opening round of match play at Northwood Country Club.
Angero and Carle scored a 6 and 4 win over Bo Welch and Joe Rush to advance in the winners bracket of the championship flight.
The tournament's defending champions, Doyle Bryan and Judge Little, also advanced in the championship flight's winners bracket, but they needed an extra hole to dispatch their first-round opponents.
Steve Stewart and Early Aycock pushed Bryan and Little to a playoff hole, after entering the back nine down by a hole.
Stewart and Aycock scored the lone birdie the foursome produced on the back nine on hole No. 14 to pull even with Bryan and Little, with four holes to go.
After staying even on holes 15-18, Bryan refound his short game on the first playoff hole.
Bryan nailed a 30-foot putt to win the hole and keep the defending champions in the hunt for the crown this year, as Bryan and Little scored the 1-up victory.
The change in format also changed the way golfers approached holes on the second day of the annual tourney.
On the first day, scoring was kept in the traditional style with teams trying to tally the lowest score on the course.
In match play, the total number of strokes used over the 18 holes isn't as important winning each individual hole.
Teams earn a point for each hole they are able to finish with less strokes than their opposition.
Little said he and his partner want to repeat as champions this year at the tournament.
In other championship play action, Tony Polizzi and Robert Sanford defeated Jack Combest and Steve Nelson 1-up; Joey Mabry and Bolton Tisdale beat Austin Holmes and Reid Davis 5 and 4; Dan Singley and Chase Williams won 2 and 1 over Clay and Matt Long; Austin Bowen and J.T. Williamson advanced with a 3 and 2 win over Paul Garner and Greg Rhyne; Scott and Keith Davis tallied a 5 and 4 win over Scott Morgan and Kelly Swain; and Johnny and Will Grace notched a 3 and 2 win over Gordon and John Rea.
The championship, first and second flights will resume play at 1 p.m. today, and the third, fourth and fifth flights will begin the third day with an 8:30 a.m. tee time.
