Rita Rawson is returning to the Marion board of aldermen.
Rawson defeated Jerry Betterton in a runoff election Tuesday by a vote of 76-60.
A nurse who works for Cardinal Health, a wholesale pharmaceutical company, Rawson was in Pensacola, Fla., on business when the news of her victory was delivered by her husband, photographer Wayne Rawson.
Rita Rawson, who previously served on Marion's five-alderman board, said she chose not to run when her office came up for re-election two years ago.
Rawson will finish the four-year term of Denny Bryan, who resigned as alderman this year. The term will end in 2005.
The runoff between Rawson and Betterton was held a week after the May 6 special election for Bryan's seat that featured four candidates: Rawson, Betterton, Ruth Bouder and Ronnie Posey.
