Meridian letter carriers will collect nonperishable food donations on their mail routes Saturday to be donated to local food banks.
Frank Polizzi, president of Letter Carriers Local 487, said mail carriers collected more than 16,000 pounds of food last year.
Meridian residents are asked to leave nonperishable food on their mailboxes so carriers can pick them up while making deliveries.
Donated food donated will be divided between the Wesley House Community Center, the Salvation Army and the South Harbor Homeless Shelter, located at the Multi-County Community Service Agency, all agencies of United Way of East Mississippi.
The 11th annual food collection is part of the National Association of Letter Carriers' one-day nationwide food drive.
