Eagles win state golf title

After trailing by six strokes following the opening round, Meridian Community College rallied on Thursday to win the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College and Region 23 Golf Tournament in Biloxi.
The Eagles of head coach Lou Hart improved their second round score by 13 shots to post a two-day total of 601.
The score was 23 strokes better than second-place and tournament host Gulf Coast's score of 624. Hinds CC was third at 625 while first round team leader Northeast was fourth at 629.
Pearl River was fifth at 647 followed by East Mississippi at 657 and Itawamba at 675.
Joey Myrick led MCC by firing the round of the day with a four-under 68. He finished with a two-day score of 148 after shooting an 80 in the first round.
Josh Martin was a stroke behind at 149. He shot 75 on Thursday after a 74 in round one on Wednesday.
Daniel Boles, a Mississippi State signee, shot a 154 for the two days which included a 75 in round two. MCC was rounded out by Clinton Hales and Mac Lee both at 156. Hales shot a 80-76 while Lee came in at 74-82.
Boles, a Clarkdale High product, was named the Hubert Tucker award winner given to honor the MACJC's Player of the Year. Lee and Myrick were named to the All-State team.
Josh Martin and Joel Myrick were named to the All-Region team.
Meridian will now head to play in the National Junior College Athletic Association's Division II National Championship next month in Phoenix, Arz.
