Republican Steve Horne of Meridian stood today as the lone candidate to take his father's seat in the Mississippi Legislature.
Horne, son of longtime incumbent state Rep. Tommy Horne, I-Meridian, was left alone in the race when Harold White, the only other candidate to file with the state Republican Party to seek the District 81 seat, withdrew. Rep. Horne opted not to seek reelection to the seat he has held for about a quarter century.
White's withdrawal was confirmed Wednesday by state GOP officials, who received a letter dated April 9. In the letter, White said he had talked with Steve Horne and was convinced he would be a conservative voice in the state House. There is no Democrat in the race.
The general election is Nov. 4.
