Students from Newton County High School were recently inducted into Beta Club. Those inducted were: Maegan Johnston, Jennifer Chaney, Julia Tucker, Dru Anderson, Jana Johnson, Whitney Knight, Megan Shoemaker, Heather Little, and Britley Kimbriel, Austin Scoggin, Chan Moore, Haley Harris, Laura Foreman, Gwen Johnson, Francessca Hussey, Casey Nelson, Amanda Eaves, Felicia Allgood, Khristy Measell, Carrie Rowzee, Jonathan Jackson, Noah Cook, Joseph Buckley, Anthony Engram, Brandon Ezell, Robert Westbrook, Kyle Barrett, Timothy Johnson, Drew Gillis, Josh Sheehan and Justin Farmer.
East Central Community College sophomore Shancey Young of Forest and faculty member Tommy Clopton of Decatur were recognized at the 16th Annual Higher Education Appreciation Day-Working for Academic Excellence program in Jackson.
The day is sponsored by the state's corporate community and coordinated by the Mississippi Association of Colleges. Young is an honor student in the college's Associate Degree Nursing Program and Clopton, a Wesson native, teaches chemistry.
Meridian Community College scholars Leanna McLauglin and Jaricus Whitlock of Meridian recently were named at-large winners during the 19th Annual Ken Wooten Scholars Bowl competition.
Twelve teams from community colleges throughout Mississippi visited Ole Miss for two days of competition in a quiz-bowl format, fielding questions on science and technology, mathematics, humanities, fine arts and social and behavioral sciences.
The Scholars Bowl gives community college students a chance to show what they know while experiencing Ole Miss in a positive atmosphere said Beckett Howorth, the university's director of admissions.
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College-Jeff Davis won the bowl competition, Itawamba Community College placed second and Southwest Mississippi Community College-Summit placed third.
Students from Northeast Mississippi Community College-Booneville and East Central Community College-Decatur were also named at-large winners for correctly answering a large number of questions during the competition.
