The Mississippi Department of Corrections moved 26 inmates from the Lauderdale County jail Wednesday to the state penitentiary system.
The transfer of prisoners was larger than normal, according to Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie.
The Lauderdale County jail can house up to 310 prisoners.
The jail's current population is below 150. Another 70 prisoners are under the county's supervision at its "Hilltop House." Inmates housed there earn time off in a work program.
