West sweeps Northeast Lauderdale on hardwood

For the third time this season, West Lauderdale and Northeast Lauderdale squared off in basketball action and for the third time West came away with a sweep.
The Knights held off runs by the Trojans and improved to 8-0 on the season with a 70-57 victory while the Lady Knights rolled past Northeast 66-37.
Northeast Lauderdale made several runs at the Knights in the boys game, but came up just short in the comeback attempts.
The Knights used early pressure and took advantage of a lot of misses by Northeast to jump out to an early lead. West Lauderdale started the game with an 8-0 run and outscored the Trojans 16-2 in the first five minutes of the game.
Northeast was able to add a couple of late buckets in the quarter to cut the lead down to 22-10 at the break.
West Lauderdale stretched the lead to 13 points with just over five minutes to play in the half, but the Trojans started to roll and stormed back.
Northeast cut the lead to eight points with free throws from Marcus Betts and a basket by Antonio Clayton. Greg Powell then hit a three-point and a added another bucket to cut the lead to three points at half.
The Knights opened the second half with four straight points, but Northeast answered. The Trojans cut the lead to two points on two separate occasions in the first three minutes of the half. Then West Lauderdale began to stretch the lead. It went on a 7-0 to stretch the lead to nine points and then added a late basket to make the score 49-38 after three quarters of play.
Northeast was able to come within seven points in the fourth quarter, but West Lauderdale controlled the ball and used free throws to extend the lead. The Knights made nine free throws down the stretch and held on for the 70-57 victory.
Calvin Moore led West Lauderdale with 21 points while Boo Ramsey added 12. Greg Powell and Marcus Betts each had 17 to lead the Trojans while Harold Grace added 11.

The Lady Knights used a big run in the third quarter to extend their lead and rolled to a 66-37 victory.
West Lauderdale jumped out to a nine-point lead after the first quarter. Northeast did not score in the final 4:19 seconds of the quarter as the Lady Knights went on a 9-0 run despite going 0-6 from the free throw line in the final three minutes.
West Lauderdale stretched the lead to 14 points with a 12-3 run in the second quarter, but the Lady Trojans were able to cut the lead down to 31-19 at halftime.
The Lady Knights put the game away in the third quarter. They went on a 15-3 run to start the half and stretched the lead to 24 points with 3:10 left in the third quarter.
West Lauderdale held a 52-27 lead after three quarters and then stretched the lead to as many as 33 points in the fourth quarter. The Lady Trojans were able to cut the lead to 29 with a three-pointer in the final seconds and West Lauderdale took the 66-37 win.
J.J. Huggins led the Lady Knights with 20 points. Kristina Gardner and Shannon Lloyd each had 10 points in the victory. Quin Jackson led Northeast with 10 points while Shaquita Bell had nine.
