Bay Springs pulls upset with shutout win

BAY SPRINGS Bay Springs pulled off its second straight upset in the 2A playoffs by blanking Enterprise 32-0 Friday night.
Bay Springs, which entered the playoffs as the No. 4 seed from Region 7, knocked off the No. 2 team from Region 7 in Enterprise. The win follows up a 17-7 win over the top-seed from Region 5 in Clarkdale.
Now, Bay Springs (8-4) will face Region 7 champ Taylorsville in the quarterfinals next week. Taylorsville moved into the third round with a 29-0 win over Seminary.
Enterprise saw a fine season end with a 9-3 record.
Bay Springs head coach Cecil Hicks said he was surprised how well his team handled Enterprise, especially after getting beat by them 21-0 earlier this season.
Bay Springs' first touchdown was set up by a fumble return by LeSteven McCullum which gave his team the ball at the Enterprise 47.
Two runs by Josh Crosby of 27 and 11 yards advanced the ball to the Enterprise nine. McCullum then scored on a 9-yard TD run. Bobby Gammage then kicked the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 11:02 left in the second quarter.
Bay Springs scored its second touchdown late in the half when McCullom hit Sam Farrell on a 35-yard touchdown pass. The score capped a 76-yard drive which was boosted by a 23-yard completion from McCullum to Farrell. Gammage made the kick for a 14-0 lead with 1:01 left in the half.
Enterprise responded in the third quarter with a drive that resulted in a 42-yard field goal attempt by Michael Swancey. The kick was blocked and Bay Springs recovered at its own 37.
Bay Springs then covered the 63-yard distance in 10 plays. Crosby got the touchdown on a 6-yard run. The kick by Gammage was no good leaving the score at 20-0 with 3:29 left in the game.
Enterprise continued to have difficulty moving the ball and an interception by Farrell late in the quarter pretty much settled things.
Bay Springs scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to ice the game. The first of the scores came with 10:46 left when Crosby scored on a 4-yard run. The kick failed leaving Bay Springs in front at 26-0.
Enterprise went for a fourth-down in its own territory but quarterback Adam Simpson was sacked for a loss and Bay Springs took over at the 35.
Eight plays later, Bay Springs was back in the endzone following a 1-yard plunge by McCullom. The kick was blocked leaving the score at 32-0 with 3:46 left in the game.
Enterprise was led defensively by Zeb Swain with nine tackles. Michael Clark had two sacks.
