Meridian High boys, NEL girls take cross-country wins

Meridian High School's Peter Davidson and Northeast Lauderdale High Schools Melissa Brents won individual honors at a cross-country track meet at Northeast Lauderdale High School on Thursday afternoon, and also led their team's to the boys and girls titles respectively.
Northeast will host another meet on Thursday, with the girls running at 4 p.m. and the boys competing after the girls are through.
Davidson cruised around the 5,000 meter course in a time of 17:45.1, easily besting second-place Brandon Labue of Forest, who finished with a 19:01.
Meridian High School was first with 46 points, while Northeast Lauderdale was second at 58. Neshoba Central was third with 81, while Union was fourth with 83.
Brents posted a 17:14.2 around the 4,000 meter girls course, to nip Newton County's Mandy McGrevey by 1.3 seconds.
Northeast scored 53 points to take the girls win, while Forest was second with 57 points, Neshoba Central third at 63 and Union fourth at 65.
In the boys action, Meridian's Florian Werner was third at 19.56, while Newton County's Micah Lanier was fourth at 19:56.9. Fifth was Meridian's Thomas Bishop with a time of 20:08.7.
Finishing sixth through 10th were: Pierre Barlow, Forest; Alex Currie, Northeast Lauderdale; David Young, Northeast Lauderdale; Jeremy Talbert, Northeast Lauderdale; and David Mann, Newton County.
Taking third on the girls side of the action was Sharon Martin of Newton, while Ashley Jenks of Neshoba Central was fourth and Forest's Maggie Moore was fifth.
Finishing sixth through 10th were: Laurie Vaughn, Union; Amy Ely, Forest; Patricia Tahawah, Neshoba Central; Kristy Horton, Union; and Maggie McDill, Newton County.
