The Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors has 10 days to appoint a new District 4 supervisor to replace Q.V. Sykes, who died Sunday of lung cancer.
Supervisors are expected to officially announce the vacancy at tonight's regular board meeting.
Lauderdale County supervisors are elected to serve four-year terms. Sykes was in the third year of his second term in the $37,343 a year job.
Donna Jill Johnson, Lauderdale County circuit clerk, said before people can begin to qualify for the post, county supervisors must officially declare the vacancy.
The supervisors will meet today at 5 p.m. at the Lauderdale County courthouse.
Anyone wanting to qualify to run for the office will have to pick up a petition from the circuit clerk's office and get the signatures of 15 registered voters from District 4.
Prospective candidates are not required to declare a party affiliation because it is a special election. The deadline to qualify to run for the office is Sept. 6.
