Laurel Lightning takes 8-and-Under crown

Undefeated and unscored upon was the Laurel Soccer Association's Lightning team here in the 8-and-Under Girls Tournament of the State Games of Mississippi.
The Lightning capped its run to the gold medal by beating the Grenada Lightning 1-0 in Sunday morning's championship game at Meridian's Jaycee Fields.
Laurel finished 4-0 in the eight-team tournament and did not give up a single goal. Laurel finished pool play with a 3-0 record.
Sharing keeper duties for the Laurel Lightning were Karry Moore and Erin Morgan. The lone goal in Sunday's championship game was scored by Cherish Burroughs.
The bronze medal wound up being shared by Northeast Jackson and Greenwood. The teams went five overtimes before settling for a 0-0 draw.
In the 10-and-under girls soccer division, the Clinton Craze defeated the South Madison County Crushers 3-1 to take the gold medal. Clinton finished 3-0-1 in the tournament. The bronze medal was won by the Hattiesburg Blasters.
In the 12-and-under girls final, the Greenwood Lasers wrapped up an impressive tournament with a 4-2 victory over the Singing River Lady Rebels for the gold medal. Greenwood finished 4-0 in the tournament and outscored its opponents by a 13-4 count.
The bronze medal was won by the Laurel Da'Bombs who edged the Greenville Wild Thangs 5-4 in a shootout.
