Carmichael: Amtrak president's resignation understandable

Amtrak Reform Council Chairman Gil Carmichael said the resignation of Amtrak President George Warrington is another reason the rail service needs restructuring.
Last month, the Amtrak Reform Council recommended to Congress that functions and responsibilities of Amtrak be spread among state government, federal government and freight companies.
At the same time, Warrington threatened to end long-distance passenger trains including the Crescent, which serves Meridian unless Congress gives Amtrak $1.2 billion next year.
Meridian Mayor John Robert Smith, who became chairman last month of Amtrak's Board of Directors, lauded Warrington for his persistent and visionary leadership.''
But just as important, George's refreshing candor has sparked a vital debate about the role and benefits of passenger rail in meeting the country's transportation's needs,'' Smith said.
