DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. Dale Earnhardt, the greatest stock car of his era, was killed in a crash on the last turn of the last lap of Sunday's Daytona 500 as he tried to protect Michael Waltrip's victory.

Coach Walter Walton got what he wanted in the form of a 67-49 win over Newton in the first round of the Class 2A South State playoffs. But the standing room only crowd also got what they came to see in the form of Warrior point guard Kevin Ray Alex throwing alley-oop passes to forward Ivan Billie. Choctaw Central improved to 27-4 on the year and play in the second round of the South State tourney held at Philadelphia starting Friday. Newton ends the season at 11-19.
MENDENHALL Since arriving on the basketball scene at Lamar School two years ago, coach Charles Shaffer's Raiders have often discussed playing for a state championship. And now, after last night's stunning 62-41 decision over Marshall Academy, the Northstate champion, in the opening round of the MPSA AAA Tournament at Simpson Academy, the Raiders have kept their hopes alive to do just that win a Class AAA crown.

PHILADELPHIA Leads are never safe. Never. Just ask your favorite coach. Never, never, never safe. So bear in mind that when Philadelphia sprang to a 24-5 first quarter lead over Gulfport St. John in the first round 2A South State game here Tuesday night, it didn't phase their coach Bobby Richardson. And when the Tornadoes, behind the hot shooting of Antwan McAfee and his game-high 22 points, waltzed to a 65-28 advantage late in the third quarter, he still wasn't overly content. But nonetheless, Richardson went to his bench for a mop-up crew in the fourth quarter, one that held on for a 74-45 Philly victory over the 16-16 Eagles.
DEKALB It's a good thing Linda Jackson accompanied her husband Charles to Kemper County's Tuesday night first-round playoff game with Vancleave. If she hadn't, the Wildcats would have had a very hard time explaining himself. Because after his Wildcats got their first trip ever to South State semifinals with a 72-34 basting of the Bulldogs, Jackson's face and shirt were both smothered in makeup and lipstick. Mothers and fans mauled Jackson, whose team will now face Franklin County, a 62-56 winner over Carthage, in the Class 3A south semifinals Friday.

The Answer …
The boys' teams are known as the Commodores, while the girls' teams are called the Sailorettes.
Sports Faces …
Steve Nelson
Who is the guy with the black and white stripes?
That's Steve Nelson of Newton.
Nelson is in his third year of refereeing high school basketball games.
Nelson is ineligible to referee high school football, because he is the head coach at Lake High School.
Nelson is also an avid golfer. In his spare time, he can be found at a local course with his friends playing golf.
Among Nelson's top-finishes, he finished eighth place twice in the Mississippi State Amateur Tournament.
Nelson does not umpire high school baseball. Why?
