Scrimmage makes USM's Green happy

From Combined Reports
Oct. 30, 2001
The Golden Eagles' second scrimmage of the season saw the Black team beat the Gold squad, 70-62, in a Saturday game-condition scrimmage at Reed-Green Coliseum.
The Black squad led 43-36 at the half and held on for the win, despite the Gold team putting five players in double figures. Senior Elvin Mims led the winners with a game-high 20 points, and Ben Lambert contributed 16 and was impressive inside. Pete Meneses added 14 on six-of-eight shooting, and Brandon Gay rounded out the winners' double-figure scorers with 11.
Three players, Clement Carter, David Haywood and Brad Richardson, had 13 each for the Gold Squad, while Mario Myles and Charles Gaines had 11 each.
The scrimmage left head coach James Green in a pleasant mood. "We had some players who played better than they practiced," Green said, "But we also had some players who had practiced well but did not show it in the scrimmage. That always seems to happen at this time of the year."
Golden Eagle players also received their 2000-2001 Conference USA championship rings during the Southern Mississippi-Houston football game and Green says it was a big day for his team.
Green also announced that freshman signee Jasper Johnson of Hollandale likely will miss the season due to a shoulder injury.
The Eagles will open the season Nov. 7 at home playing the first of two exhibition games and will open the regular season Nov. 17 against Jackson State.
Kick-off time changed for East Carolina game
The game time for the Southern Miss-East Carolina football game on Nov. 23 at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, N.C. has been moved to 10 a.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
Seven USM football games have been selected to be televised this season. Oklahoma State was the only game televised on ESPN, and UAB was shown regionally on CSS (Comcast/Chapter Sports Southeast). The Louisville game was on ESPN2, as will be Saturday's game at Penn State, the Nov. 29 contest against Alabama and the Dec. 7 game with Texas Christian.
If Southern Miss appears in a bowl game this season, the Golden Eagles would tie the 1997 and 2000 seasons for the most games televised in a season.
Since becoming a charter member of Conference USA in 1996, USM has appeared on television in 36 of 63 games.
Lady Eagles split two weekend soccer matches
The USM women's soccer team blanked Texas Christian University 3-0 at the USM Track and Soccer Complex on Sunday, after dropping a 2-1 Conference USA match on the road against Houston on Friday.
USM, now 9-6 overall and 3-6 in league play, returns to action on Saturday when the Lady Eagles travel to New Orleans to take on Tulane.
Clair Rea scored two goals and Tricia Wiles one in the Sunday win, while Wiles scored for USM on Friday.
Louisville takes win in volleyball action
The visiting Lady Eagles lost to the University of Louisville in three straight games on Friday night, extending their losing streak to seven.
Bridget Files led USM, 7-14 overall and 2-9 in C-USA action, with 11 kills.
