    Newton County remains perfect with 28-12 win over Carthage

    The Newton County Cougars stayed undefeated with a 28-12 Region 5-3A win over Carthage Friday at Decatur.
    Darryl Mapp carried the ball 25 times for 238 yards and two touchdowns as Newton County improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in 5-3A. The Cougars are ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 3A, but should move up to the top spot after Columbia lost 12-7 to West Marion on Thursday.
    Josh Avant and Terrance Patrick led the Cougar defense with 11 tackles apiece.
    Carthage scored first on a 68-yard pass. The extra point failed.
    Kendrick Windham pulled the Cougars even later in the opening period with a three-yard run. David McConnell's PAT gave Newton County a 7-6 lead.
    The Cougars broke the game open with a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter. Mapp scored on a one-yard run with Colby Amis finding the end zone from a yard out.
    Mapp scored again on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter with McConnell's PAT putting the Cougars up 28-6.
    Carthage, 5-3, scored on a five-yard run in the final period.
    Newton County plays for the Region 5-3A championship next Friday at Philadelphia.
    Union 32
    Noxapater 8
    Union got three touchdown runs from freshman running back Anthony Johnson and scored on two fumble recoveries to crush Noxapater at Noxapater in a Region 3-1A contest.
    Johnson scored on runs of 52, 22, and 28 yards for the Yellow Jackets as they improved to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in 3-1A.
    Derrick Harris scored on a 35-yard fumble return and Tony Warren scored on a 37-yard fumble return.
    Noxapater fell to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the region.
    Union will host Nanih Waiya next Friday.
    Kosciusko 14
    Neshoba Central 0
    Kosciusko scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter and on a three-yard run in the second quarter in taking the Region 2-4A victory at Neshoba Central.
    The Rockets fell to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in 2-4A with the loss.
    Neshoba hosts Aberdeen next Friday.
    Winston Academy 32
    Magnolia Heights 21
    The defending Academy AA state champion Patriots got the win at Senatobia to improve to 7-1.
    The homestanding Chiefs scored first on a 96-yard kickoff return by Chance Williams.
    Winston pulled even on a four-yard run by Jay McMillin, who then kicked the tying extra point.
    McMillin put the Patriots up to stay with an 18-yard run in the second quarter. Caleb Metts gave Winston a 19-7 halftime lead with a 73-yard run.
    Magnolia Heights, 6-2, got to within 19-14 on a 30-yard pass in the third period. The Chiefs completed 21-of-36 passes for the game for 288 yards.
    Scott Peterson tallied on a three-yard run for Winston in the fourth quarter. Peterson had 19 carries for 142 yards.
    McMillin had 15 carries for 50 yards with Metts gaining 88 yards on 10 rushes. Lenny Boatner picked up 57 yards on eight rushes.
    Louisville 7
    West Point 0
    The Wildcats improved to 4-4 overall and 4-1 in Region 2-4A with the win over the Green Wave at West Point.
    Louisville will play at Northeast Lauderdale next Friday.
    Nanih Waiya 48
    Edinburg 7
    The Warriors upped their Region 3-1A record to 4-2 and their overall mark to 6-2 with the blowout win at Edinburg.
    Forest 28
    Velma Jackson 16
    The Bearcats stunned the Class 3A world with the win over the Falcons at Camden.
    Forest improved to 2-6 overall and 2-1 in Region 6-3A.
    Heidelberg 28
    Greenwood 12
    The Oilers got their second win in a row and their second victory of the season as they shocked Class 4A Greenwood at Heidelberg.
    Heidelberg improved to 2-6 with the win.
    Newton 29
    South Leake 6
    The Division 5-2A leading Tigers upped their league record to 3-0 and their overall mark to 6-2 with the win over the Wildcats at Newton.
    Wayne County 10
    Oak Grove 7
    The War Eagles remained perfect in Region 3-5A with the three-point win at Oak Grove.
    Wayne County improved to 4-0 in the region and 7-1 overall.
    Bay Springs 27
    Seminary 0
    The Bulldogs improved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in Region 7-2A with the road win.
    In scores from games involving area Alabama teams, Patrician Academy fell 21-7 to Wilcox; Southern Choctaw dropped a 21-6 decision to Leroy; and Choctaw County dropped a 34-14 contest at UMS-Wright Prep which is ranked No. 1 in Alabama in Class 4A; and Sumter Academy took a 17-0 victory at Southern Academy.
