    Pumpkin Patch' opens Tuesday
    The 3rd annual "Pumpkin Patch" will be begin Tuesday, and continue through Oct. 31, at Oakland Heights United Methodist Church.
    Pumpkins will sell for 50 cents to $25. Money raised will go to the Lauderdale County Habitat for Humanity and relief efforts in New York and Washington. School tours and activities will take place again this year, Monday-Saturday, from 10 a.m. until dark. Sunday hours are noon until dark.
    Teachers interested in tours can contact the church office at 485-5262.
    Child Safety Day
    set for Oct. 20
    A Child Safety Day will be held Oct. 20, from 12:30 p.m.-4 p.m., at Magna Home Health. Muppet shows will be held every half-hour. The show is for children ages 3 to 10. There will be clowns, cotton candy, popcorn, snowballs and door prizes.
    The event is presented by Magna Home Health of Mississippi and Primary Home Care of Alabama. Magna Home Health is located on Highway 19 North, next to Wal-Mart. For information, call 484-6726.
    MHS Booster Club
    holds fund-raiser
    The Meridian High Boys Basketball Booster Club will sponsor a "Draw-Down" in connection with the annual Blue-White Game and Meet the Wildcats Night. The event will be held Oct. 20 with the celebrity game beginning at 6 p.m. in the basketball gymnasium. Tickets to the "Draw-Down" are $20. Admission to the game is free.
    King's Academy
    holds fund-raiser
    King's Academy volunteers will hold a rummage sale on Oct. 20, from 6 a.m.-noon, at the Church of the Way on State Boulevard Extension. All money raised will benefit the school.
    NAMI sponsors golf tournament
    The National Association of the Mentally Ill will sponsor the 6th Annual NAMI Mississippi Golf Tournament on Oct. 20. The four-person scramble, held at Lakeview Gold Course, will begin at 8:30 a.m. The fee is $50 per person; all proceeds will benefit NAMI. To register, call 693-3301.
    Ageless Heroes' program
    seeks local nominations
    Nominations will be accepted until Oct. 26 for the Mississippi "Ageless Heroes" program.
    The program honors 24 senior citizens each year for their activities, vitality and accomplishments. People nominated must be Mississippi residents. There are six award categories: Community Involvement, Creativity, Love of Learning, New Beginnings, Good Neighbor and Vitality.

    Make a Difference
    Day set for Oct. 27
    Make a Difference Day will be observed in Clarke County on Oct. 27. The County Chamber of Commerce, a sponsor of the event, asks every person in the county to perform a random act of kindness for someone on that day. This act of kindness can be done for a friend, a family member or a stranger. If you are a recipient of one of these random acts of kindness, please call the Chamber of Commerce at 776-5701.
    St. Patrick hosts
    fall festival
    St. Patrick School will host its annual Fall Carnival and Spaghetti Dinner on Oct. 27 in the Family Life Center, next to the school at 2700 Davis St.
    The event will be from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Admission is $1 each, with a maximum of $5 per family. The carnival will feature food, games, a costume contest, a haunted house and much more. Spaghetti dinners will be served from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. for $5 a plate. Take-outs are available, and orders of 10 or more plates can be delivered.
    Saddle Club holds
    fall trail ride
    The Bonita Lakes Saddle Club will hold its Fall Trail Ride on Nov. 3. Registration will be from 8 a.m.-9 a.m. at the Lauderdale County Agri-Center. The morning ride will be from 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Lunch will be served from noon-1 p.m. The afternoon ride is scheduled from 1:30 p.m.-4 p.m.
    The gate fee is $15 per person. The cost for children under 12 is $5. Owners must have proof of negative Coggins tests for their horses. No dogs will be allowed on the trail ride.

    Items wanted for
    MLT Variety Shop
    Donations are now being accepted for Meridian Little Theatre's Guild Fall Variety Shop. Donated items can include furniture, lamps, dishes, appliances, books, clothes and much more.
    Items may be dropped off Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. only. Pick-up service is available for large loads and donations are tax-deductible.
    The sale will be held Nov. 9-10. For information, call Dorothy Torgerson at 482-0930 or MLT at 482-6371.
    Wesley House begins
    holiday registration
    Wesley House Community Center will take applications for Christmas assistance for families in need beginning Monday, Nov. 9.
    To apply, visit the center between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Bring proof of all income from any source, including employment (pay check stub), Social Security, SSI, retirement, child support, public assistance and food stamps.
    Applicants must also bring current receipts for rent or mortgage and utility bills (electric, gas, water). All applicants must provide some form of identification, such as a Social Security card or a driver's license.
    Wesley House is located at 1520 Eighth Ave. For more information, call 485-4736.
    Salvation Army holds
    Christmas registration
    The Salvation Army will take applications for needy families seeking Christmas assistance. Applications will be accepted Oct. 20, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
    Applicants must bring the following:
    Photo identification;
    Identification for everyone in the household. Adults need driver's license, picture ID or Social Security card. Children need birth certificate or Medicaid card and Social Security card;
    Proof of residence lease, utility bill or rent receipt; and
    Proof of income check subs, Social Security, food stamps, child support, unemployment or retirement.
    Applicants must apply in person at the Salvation Army office, 117 Sixth Ave. For information, call 483-6156.
