Grissom and 3 council members re-elected; Freeman unseats Hamilton

RUSSELLVILLE — Incumbent Mayor David Reed Grissom will serve another term after defeating challenger Guadalupe Martinez in Tuesday’s municipal election.

In city council races:

  • District 2 – Incumbent Darren Woodruff defeated challenger Hunter Smith.
  • District 3 – Incumbent Gary Cummings defeated Donnie Horton.
  • District 4 – Challenger Lonnie Freeman unseated incumbent Dexter Hamilton.
  • District 5 – Incumbent James “Jamie” Harris defeated challenger Robbie Bryan Richardson.
  • District 1 Councilman David Palmer was certified without opposition on July 8 after no other candidates qualified by the June 24 deadline, securing his fourth term on the council.

The mayor and council members elected this year will begin their new terms on Nov. 3.

Before then, the results must be formally certified. The council will canvass — or officially certify — the election results during its next meeting, which has been rescheduled for Sept. 2 at 11 a.m. in the city hall auditorium.

The council had already voted to move its regular meeting from Sept. 1 because of Labor Day.

Instead of the usual 6 p.m. time, the meeting will be conducted in the morning to align with canvassing requirements.
