An estimated 30,000 attend 44th annual Watermelon Fest
RUSSELLVILLE–The 44th annual Franklin County Watermelon Festival is in the books.
There’s no official record of how many attended this year’s festival, but Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Cassie Medley said an economic study conducted last year by Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourism Association estimated around 30,000 attend each year.
Medley said a brief period of rain Friday evening likely affected turnout for the first day. “I think the festival went very well,” Medley said. “It was just hot and humid. We had familiar faces returning as vendors, as well as some new ones. The rain cooled things down Friday evening.”
Medley said chamber officials have gotten favorable comments about the entertainment lineup, which included former “American Idol” contestant Will Mosely.
“Our festival includes locals, as well as those that come from outside to entertain,” Medley said. “That’s something that’s extra special. A lot of people have a tradition of coming to the festival with their family. Whether people eat from a vendor or one of our local restaurants, that helps impact businesses.”
Medley said it not only takes a lot of planning, but also financial support, to make the festival happen.

“The festival couldn’t happen without the financial support from our sponsors,” Medley said. “We rely on that, along with T-shirt sales. It all works together.”
Medley said the festival is a good way to bring the community together, adding it provides something fun to look forward to each year.
“It’s grown a lot over the years,” she added. “It’s wonderful to see everyone coming together, having fun and spending time together. We want to say a big thank you to everyone who participated – from attendees, vendors, sponsors, volunteers and everyone in between. Your contributions year after year are what makes this event such a success. Thank you for showing up, braving the heat, and having a good time with us! We hope to see you all again in 2026!”
