40 attend Golden Tigers youth football camp

RUSSELLVILLE — Russellville High School’s football stadium came alive with energy and excitement as children in grades K-6 took part in the Golden Tigers annual youth football camp.

Held on a hot summer evening, the event gave young athletes a chance to learn football fundamentals from the RHS coaching staff and varsity players.

This year’s camp marked the second summer in a row under head coach Dustin Goodwin’s direction.

“It’s fun to see our kids and coaches interact with our youth,” Goodwin said. “I think they have a really good time when they come out, and it’s always fun to be around them.”

One of the highlights, Goodwin noted, is the involvement of current varsity players, who assist in coaching and mentoring the campers.

“We tell them all the time they’re looked up to by the kids in elementary school. They’re their heroes,” he said. “All of us who went through it have lived it. You’re watched, and what you do matters.”

That message is something the coaching staff reinforces often. “We challenge our guys every day to do the right thing and be good examples,” Goodwin continued. “Being able to give back and be a part of these kids’ lives is special.”

Goodwin said around 40 kids took part in this year’s camp.

“Our numbers are down from last year a little bit, but summertime is always tough to find the exact right time,” he said.

Even so, Goodwin said the focus remained on making the experience memorable for those who showed up.

“But the ones who are here get to play some football, be around the guys, and they get to finish with some water, so they’re happy.”

The fun didn’t end when the drills were over.

Campers also received T-shirts for participating and wrapped up the evening with time on inflatables near the field house.
