PCHS senior signs to play golf at NWSCC

PCHS senior signs to play golf at NWSCC

PHIL CAMPBELL — Kaylie Motes has signed a scholarship to play golf at Northwest Shoals Community College. Motes, who has been playing for four years, has been with the PCHS program since it began.

NWSCC golf coach Tim King said he is “super excited” about adding Motes to the roster.

“She is a high character kid from a great family and a tremendous five-sport athlete in her high school career,” King said. “I truly believe golf is her sport. She will bring leadership to our new program, and she will be an asset to our college and to our community.”

PCHS assistant golf coach Ryan Swinney said the school is proud of Motes for her accomplishments.

“She’s one of the originals who started our girls golf team here, along with two other seniors — Lydia Garrison and Mary Beth Fisher,” Swinney said.

He described Motes as “very athletic” and “one of our better players,” noting she “hits the ball a long way.” He said she has improved “a whole lot” over the last few years.

“She’s played basketball and volleyball and been a cheerleader,” Swinney said. “We’re all for students playing more than one sport, and I’m glad she did.”

Swinney said he’s looking forward to seeing where golf takes Motes after high school.

“I’ve come to love golf,” Motes said. “It’s kind of my favorite sport, and I’m really excited to play at Northwest. I’m glad that I got the opportunity to be part of this because I think it’s going to be a good program.”

Motes said golf isn’t like any other sport she’s played.

“I just enjoy it,” she said. “It’s some time to myself. I get to go out there on the course and just play. It’s relaxing. Even though we are competing, we’re all pushing each other just to work harder and be better out there,” Motes said of her high school team.

Motes said it’s been “a really good team” at PCHS and she’s looking forward to seeing what golf has in store for her at NWSCC.

“I’d like to thank my coaches and everyone at Phil Campbell High School, as well as Northwest Shoals Community College, for giving me this opportunity,” Motes said.

At PCHS, Motes has been involved in a number of clubs, including FCCLA, FBLA, Flourish and the Giving Club.

Her plans include twoyearsatNorthwest Shoals followed by a possible transfer to the University of North Alabama. She is planning to major in either obstetric or pediatric sonography.
