Lady Golden Tigers earn area second seed

The Russellville Lady Golden Tigers have clinched the second seed in the upcoming Class 5A Area 15 tournament with a 2-2 area record finishing behind West Point.

They did so by defeating the Lawrence County Lady Red Devils, 53-44.

With the victory, RHS improved to 13-11 on the season overall.

Ella Copeland led Russellville with 28 points. Angeleah Smith added 11 and Laila Hill scored six. Blevyn Sappington had five, and Elizabeth Davis scored three for the Lady Tigers.

Lawrence County defeated Russellville in the boys’ game by a final score of 67-41. With the loss, RHS fell to 0-4 in the area during the regular season.

Russellville’s girls hosted Deshler on Jan. 19 and the Golden Tigers lost, 91-59. Copeland led RHS with 31 points. Smith added 14 while Sappington and Hill scored six each. Bella Malone also entered the scoring column with two points.

Deshler then took the boys’ game 69-59. Sir Williams led Russellville in scoring with 21 points. Parker Odom had 10 while Tripp Cleveland and Daniel Aycock scored nine each. Malaki Groce added eight and Noah Smith scored two points.

The Florence Falcons visited Russellville on Jan. 20. FHS took the girls’ game by the score of 68-51. Copeland led Russellville with 38 points. Sappington scored five while Sadie OdomandSmithhadthree points each. Samantha Wilson added two points for the Lady Tigers.

Florence defeated Russellville in the boys’ game, 73-61. RHS got off to a hot start and led 28-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Golden Tigers were up 38-30 at the half. The Falcons then put together a 23-8 third period to grab the lead.

Williams led Russellville with 25 points. Cleveland scored 13 and Aycock added nine. Groce and Odom contributed seven points each for RHS.
