Russellville teams get big wins over Lawrence County

The Russellville varsity basketball teams closed the area portion of their regular season with victories over the Lawrence County Red Devils.

Russellville’s boys defeated Lawrence County 66-59, while the girls soundly defeated Lawrence County 77-34.

EJ King scored 25 points to lead Russellville to victory over Lawrence County. Cam Phinizee followed with 18. Jah Williams scored 9, Parker Odom added 4, and Sir Williams and Daniel Aycock had 3 points each. Malaki Groce and Rylan Pratt rounded out the scoring for RHS with 2 points apiece.

Angeleah Smith led RHS to victory over LCHS with 27 points. Ella Copeland followed with 23 while Laila Hill also scored in double figures with 13. Sadie Odom added 5 points while Kaylee Suggs, Samantha Wilson and Alexia Groce had 3 points each.

Area tournament The RHS boys, which are the regular season area champions with a 4-0 record, will host the championship game of the upcoming area tournament. Russellville’s area includes the Golden Tigers, Lawrence County and West Point.

RHS will receive a firstround bye in the area tourney and will automatically advance to the sub-regional. The area tournament winner will host a sub-regional game, and the loser will travel for sub-regional action as teams play for a spot in the Northwest Regional at Wallace State Community College.

The Russellville girls earned second place in regular season area play with a 2-2 record. They play Lawrence Countys in the opener of the area tournament as West Point (4-0) gets the first-round bye in the girls’ bracket.

Other games Earlier in the week, Russellville’s boys hosted and defeated Haleyville by a score of 93-70. King had 37 points, Jah Williams added 22, Sir Williams scored 14, Phinizee added 7, Pratt scored 6, Odom had 4 and Groce scored 3.

RHS went to Florence and fell to the Falcons on Jan. 21 by a score of 84-51. King led the Golden Tigers with 28 points. Sir Williams had 11 points, Jah Williams scored 5, Daniel Aycock added 3, while Gavin McDaniel and Odom had 2 points each.

The Russellville girls defeated Haleyville 67-26. Copeland led RHS with 25 points while Smith and Hill added 12 each. Bella Malone scored six, Jemma Moore had 5, and Groce added four points.

RHSwasdefeatedbythe Florence Lady Falcons by a score of 79-66. Copeland was Russellville’s leading scorer with 28. Smith and Hill had 10 points each, Suggs added 6, Odom 5, Moore 4, Malone 2 and Groce had 1 point.
