Vina coach picks up 200th win

Vina varsity girls head coach Richie Hester picked up his 200th career win this past week with a 67-51 victory over Phillips.

Hester is beginning his 16th season as a head coach. He was at Belgreen prior to Vina.

“All the wins belong to the players that play for me,” said Hester. “They showed a lot of heart and overcame a lot of obstacles to win. In probably half of the 200 games, we were the underdog, but together as a team, we found a way to win.

“Also, I want to thank the people who gave me the opportunities to coach and win 200 games. Maybe I’ll  have the opportunity to win 300.”

The Red Devils are 6-4 on the season and 1-2 in area play.

Kaitlyn Athey led Vina with 23 points. Khylee Brooks had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kaley Attaway had 12 points and eight rebounds. Sara Harper added 11 points and 10 assists.

Vina also picked up a win this past week against Tremont, Miss., 67-39. Harper led Vina with 20 points and seven assists. Athey made five three-pointers, scoring 19 points. Attaway had eight points and 12 rebounds.

The Vina girls lost their other area game this past week, 56-41, to Hackleburg. Athey had 17 points, followed by Harper with 10 points.
