BHS teams down Phillips, split with Hackleburg
The Belgreen Bulldogs girls and boys teams both took down Phillips for area wins this past week. The boys were also victorious over Hackleburg, while the girls fell to the Panthers.
GIRLS
The Lady Bulldogs beat Phillips 64-35 and fell to Hackleburg 40-32.
In the Phillips game, Belgreen led the Bears 12-10 at the end of the first quarter and held a slight edge at halftime, leading 25-22. The Bulldogs were able to extend their lead to 33-29 in the third quarter and hold Phillips to three points in the fourth quarter, grinding out the win.
B.B. Scott and Dacota Green led the Bulldogs with nine points each. Noelle Willingham and Makenna Fisher added six points each. Isabella Tate and Alayna Tate scored four points each. Carson Hovater ended the game with two points.
In the Hackleburg game, Belgreen couldn’t overcome a 25-point performance by Macy Moore for the Panthers, losing 55-51.
Hackleburg led 11-9 at the end of the first quarter, and the game was still tight at halftime, with the Panthers leading 26-24.
Hackleburg created some distance in the third quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 19-11 to take a 45-35 lead.
Belgreen didn’t go away, outpacing the Panthers 16-10 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough for the win.
Scott and Fisher led Belgreen with 11 points. Fisher hit three three-pointers in the fourth quarter. Hovater added nine points, Willingham eight points, Green seven points and Tate five points.
BOYS
The Belgreen Bulldogs keep plowing through their opponents, easily beating area opponents Phillips 64-35 and Hackleburg 64-35. They stay undefeated in their area and increase their record to 10-2.
Collin Bonner scored 24 points to lead Belgreen past Hackleburg. Bonner scored 20 points in the first half – 10 in each of the first two quarters.
Belgreen jumped out to a 20-7 lead and led 34-19 at halftime. The Bulldogs increased their lead to 54-27 at the end of the third quarter and cruised to the easy win.
Will Bonner followed his brother Collin with 15 points, scoring 13 of those points in the first half. Austin James added nine points, Canaan Stough six points, Carson Cox three points, Cole King and Adrian Reeves two points, and Jordan Wright one point.
Belgreen 64, Phillips 35
Will and Collin Bonner scored 19 points and 18 points respectively to lead Belgreen past Phillips earlier in the week.
Belgreen led the Bears 20-13 at the end of the first quarter and 37-24 at the half. Belgreen put the game away in the second half, leading 47-26 at the end of the third quarter, and outscored Phillips 17-7 in the fourth to put the game on ice.
Stough, Wright, James, King, Hadden Taylor and Adrian Reeves also scored for Belgreen.
Belgreen 65, Wilson 48
Belgreen rode an explosive third-quarter scoring barrage to a 65-48 consolation win over Wilson in the Times Daily Classic Saturday.
Belgreen jumped out to a 14-10 first quarter lead. Wilson cut the lead to two points, 26-24, at halftime.
The Bulldogs, led by the Bonners, blew the game open in the third quarter. Collin scored 11 points, and Will added nine points, as Belgreen outscored Wilson 25-6 to take a 51-30 lead.
Collin Bonner scored 29 points in the win. Will Bonner added 17 points. Reeves, King, Stough, James and Alex Jarnigan also scored for the Bulldogs.
Brooks 57, Belgreen 51
The Belgreen Bulldogs fell to the Brooks Lions in the opening round of the Times Daily Classic Friday night, 57-51.
Belgreen led Brooks 16-14 at the end of the first quarter, but Brooks held a one-point advantage by halftime 23-22.
The Lions extended their lead to 38-31 in the third quarter and held on to send Belgreen to the consolation bracket.
