Belgreen, Red Bay head to volleyball playoffs

The Belgreen Bulldogs and Red Bay Tigers are headed to the Von Braun Civic Center in Huntsville this week for volleyball regionals. The two teams both finished runnerup in their respective areas, earning them spots in region play.

Red Bay finished runner up in Class 2A Area 10 to Lamar County. Red Bay is in the second year of its program, and firstyear coach Amanda Ledbetter said she is proud of her team for rising to the challenge.

“It is unbelievable what this team has accomplished this year,” Ledbetter said. “At the start of the season, our goal was to win 10 games. When we did that, we wanted to make a run in the county.

Make a run they did, as the Lady Tigers were county champions.

“Then we wanted to make a run in the area,” Ledbetter said. “Every time we set a goal, the girls rose to the challenge.”

Red Bay will play Athens Bible Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. It will be a best three-of-five format. Winners will advance, and losers will be done. If the Tigers win, they will play again the same day at 5 p.m.

Belgreen finished runnerup in Class 1A Area 14 to Hackleburg. Bulldog Coach Susie Tverberg said she is excited her team is getting this opportunity.

“I am so excited for these girls,” said Tverberg. “They’ve worked very hard this season. Making it to regionals was a preseason goal, and it is an awesome feeling to see them putting in the extra effort and hard work to reach their goal.”

Belgreen will play Donoho Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
