Book Lovers attend GFWC Alabama state convention
The 126th annual GFWC Alabama State Convention was held June 3-5 at Perdido Beach Resort. Representing GFWC Book Lovers Study Club were Patricia Cox and Cheri McCain.
The convention theme, “Shining Our Light by the Sea,” was most appropriate, as club women from across the state gathered together on the sandy white beaches of Orange Beach.
The mayor of Orange Beach welcomed everyone to the Gulf Coast paradise.
Highlights of the convention included vibrant speakers who have accomplished much to empower women.
At the Friday evening banquet, Lori Renner spoke on the Veterans’ Recovery Resources, which is the only agency of its kind in the nation that helps our veterans and their families work through the pain of traumatic events. It is based in Mobile, and their services are available to those throughout the state.
A memorial service was held in remembrance of past members for 2019-2021. Book Lovers’ beloved member Dot Murphy, was acknowledged for her 50-plus years of volunteer service.
The Saturday luncheon featured Chandni Khadka, director of the International House at Jacksonville State University, and Sophie Ajembo, International House Scholarship recipient. Also Tiara Pennington, Miss Alabama, spoke on her reign and the importance of scholarships to Miss Alabama, to which GFWC Alabama contributes $1,000 each year.
Clubs in each district decorated the tables in the meeting and banquet rooms with many different beautiful centerpieces and favors throughout the convention. Book Lovers Study Club decorated a table for the Saturday luncheon with Alabama colors, using red and white flowers and elephants.
Speaking at the Saturday evening banquet was Suellen Brazil, GFWC first vice president. A GFWC Alabama past president, she continued to shine her light on the Alabama State Federation and the General Federation.
Liz Ellis, a 12-year-old camper at Camp Seale Harris, gave an outstanding speech about her experience as a Type 1 diabetic. She was diagnosed at the age of 2 and has attended Camp Seale Harris, learning how to become more independent and confident in her management of diabetes.
Maria Martin, outreach and development coordinator of Camp Seale Harris—South Alabama/Northwest Florida, was presented a contribution from the Alabama club members and a continued pledge of our efforts to educate, encourage and empower children with diabetes and their families. Book Lovers Study Club donated $500 to Camp Seale Harris.
Following the banquet, attendees enjoyed a reception honoring Suellen Brazil, GFWC first vice president, and Cynthia Geis, GFWC Southern Region president, and GFWC Alabama officers.
Throughout the convention awards were presented to clubs for their outstanding projects. Book Lovers Study Club received the GFWC Advancement Plan Legislation/Public Policy Award as well as the Leadership, Environment CSP, Communications, Public Relations and Epsilon Sigma Omicron awards and recognition for participation in the President’s Special Project, plus Scholarship and the 2728 Society.
