Red Bay falls to Spring Garden

Turnovers and the inability to generate any explosive offense doomed the Red Bay Tigers’ chances of advancing in the Class 2A state playoffs. They lost 27-2 to Spring Garden Friday night.

A quick glance at the stat sheet would lead one to think the game was a dog fight to the end. It was anything but that, however. Spring Garden dominated.

Spring Garden outgained Red Bay by 47 yards – 286 yards to 239. Both teams had trouble taking care of the football, with Red Bay turning the ball over four times and Spring Garden turning it over three times.

Red Bay was far more efficient in thirddown conversions, and Spring Garden had 112 yards in penalties.

Where it counted, though, Spring Garden dominated the game from start to finish.

After a scoreless quarter and a half, Spring Garden scored on a 24-yard run to take a 7-0 lead with 7:37 to go in the second quarter.

The Tigers forced a safety with 4:47 to go in the second quarter to capture their only points of the game, making the score 7-2.

Spring Garden scored again with 25 second left on the clock in the second quarter to take a 14-2 lead.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Spring Garden put the game away with a score at the start of the fourth quarter to take a 21-2 lead and added another score with 5:45 to go in the game to cap it off.

Aiden Quinn led Red Bay with 13 carries and 72 yards.

Red Bay ends the season with a 9-2 record.
