Tharptown boys, girls teams claim decisive victories over Vina, Hackleburg, Cherokee

GIRLS

Tharptown 68, Vina 22

Gracie Montgomery scored 17 points to lead the Tharptown Wildcats to an easy 68-22 win over the Vina Red Devils last week.

Tharptown rocketed out to a 22-10 first quarter lead. The Wildcats held the Red Devils to five or fewer points in each of the remaining three quarters.

Tharptown led 38-13 at halftime and 56-17 by the end of the third quarter.

Vina was without starting point guard Rayleigh Guin, who was recovering from an injury.

Aly Vandiver followed Montgomery with 13 points, and Autumn Montgomery scored 11 points. Sarah Mansell added nine points, Brooke Daily had seven points, Jaiden Gaston seven points, Adrianna Borden two points and Shaylee Wieting two points.

Tharptown 61, Hackleburg 32

A poor shooting night didn’t stop the Tharptown Wildcats from blowing out the Hackleburg Panthers 61-32.

Tharptown shot 35 percent from the field, going 22 of 62 and making three shots from behind the three-point arch. Tharptown also struggled from the free-throw line, making 14 of 26.

The Wildcats led the Panthers 13-4 at the end of the first quarter and 30-14 at halftime.

Montgomery led Tharptown with 19 points. Daily and Wieting followed with 11 points and 10 points respectively. Mansell added six points, Vandiver five points and Kyndall Morgan four points. Montgomery, Borden and Gaston scored two points each.

Tharptown 55, Cherokee 12

Tharptown jumped out to a 39-2 halftime lead and cruised to an easy 55-12 win over the Cherokee Indians.

Montgomery led the Wildcats with 22 points. Vandiver added 14 points.

BOYS

Tharptown 95, Vina 48

The Tharptown Wildcats had five players score in double-figures as they downed the Vina Red Devils 95-48.

Tharptown shot 54 percent from the field and made 12 three-pointers in the route.

Tharptown scored 35 points in the first quarter alone, racing out to a 35-12 lead. Winston Nolen and Edward Lopez scored nine points each in the first quarter. Tharptown increased the lead to 56-30 by halftime off 12 second-quarter points by Edwin Garcia.

The Wildcats outscored the Red Devils 29-8 in the third quarter to take an 85-38 lead.

Garcia led the Wildcats with 22 points – three three-pointers. Luis Valdez added 16 points on four three-pointers. Nolen, Lopez and Colton Simmons scored 13 points each. Ruben Alfaro added eight points, Yovani Gomez seven points and Hayden Moss three points.

Tharptown 53, Hackleburg 40

Nolen scored a season-high 26 points for the second time this season to help Tharptown defeat Hackleburg 53-40.

Hackleburg led the Wildcats early, 12-8, but Tharptown outscored the Panthers 45-28 the rest of the way for the win.

Valdez and Gomez added eight points each. Garcia had five points, and Lopez tallied four points.

Tharptown 66, Cherokee 27

The Tharptown Wildcats had no problem dispatching the Cherokee Indians, winning 66-27.

The Wildcats led 35-14 at halftime and 55-22 at the end of the third quarter.

Nolen led Tharptown with 13 points. Garcia added 12 points, and Colton Simmons grabbed 11 points.
