Tharptown softball falls in North Regional
The Tharptown Wildcats were eliminated from the Class 2A North Region after a rain-soaked weekend. The Wildcats beat Section 2-1 and Winston County 3-2 but lost to Hatton 7-1 and Collinsville 11-0.
“I’m so proud of my girls and how they grew as athletes and individuals,” said Tharptown Coach Susie Tverberg. “They’ve worked very hard this year. They have a passion for the game that drives them to be better. It’s a blessing to be a small part of their lives.”
In game one, Tharptown couldn’t manufacture runs, losing to Hatton 7-1. Hatton scored seven runs on 11 hits, while Tharptown scored one run on five hits, two of which came from Brooke Daily. Shaylee Weiting scored Tharptown’s only run.
Tharptown managed to stay alive in regional action, winning game two over Section 2-1.
The Wildcats got their two runs in the first inning after a lead-off walk to Weiting, a sacrifice bunt by Catie Dawson and a couple of errors.
Harley Borden entered the game as a courtesy runner for pitcher Olivia Ergle and also scored thanks to Section errors.
Ergle gave up two hits and no earned runs and struck out eight from the circle.
Tharptown managed three hits – a double by Olivia Darracott and singles by Ergle and Taylor Cameron.
The Wildcats held off a rally by the Winston County Yellow Jackets to stay alive in the region, winning their third game 3-2.
The Lady Wildcats scored all three of their runs in the third inning. Winston County mounted a comeback in the last inning, scoring two runs, but the Wildcats held them off.
Both teams had five hits, and Tharptown overcame five errors.
Ergle pitched a gem, allowing five hits and no earned runs, and she struck out 10 batters.
Weiting had two hits. Dawson and Daily both had a hit and an RBI. Cameron had a double.
Tharptown was eliminated by Collinsville in convincing fashion, as the Wildcats fourth opponent won 11-0 in five innings.
The Wildcats managed four hits and committed three errors.
Cameron had two of the Wildcats’ four hits. Daily and Darracott had the other two hits.
