RHS girls improve record
Regular season area play began with a home game against the Hamilton Lady Aggies March 21, and RHS dominated from start to finish. The Lady Golden Tigers took an 11-1 win in five innings to improve their record on the season to 9-7.
Senior Megan Warhurst shined in the pitching circle and the batter’s box to help lead her team to victory. She pitched four innings and allowed no runs or hits while striking out seven and walking one before Krista Sikes came on to work the game’s final inning. At the plate, Warhurst went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Russellville scored three runs in both the first and second innings and added five more in the fourth frame. RHS had 14 hits and was successful five of six times on stolen base attempts.
AJ Taylor, Madison Murray, Karlie Moore and Tori Tiffin all had two hits each, while Alivia Clemmons, Autumn Logan and Makala O’Neal had one apiece. The hit by O’Neal was a double, and she also walked once.
RHS played well in all phases of the game to take the important area contest.
“The girls did a very good job. They paid attention to needed to be done, and they handled the job well,” said Russellville head coach Kathryn Montgomery. “They hit the ball, they adjusted well at the plate, and we’ve been working on being able to make early adjustments.
“They played solid defense, and Megan had a great game pitching, and Krista came out and closed it.”
Earlier in the week March 19, the Wilson Lady Warriors came to RHS and took a 3-1 win over Russellville. The two teams were scoreless until the top half of the fourth inning, when WHS scored two runs. The lone Russellville run came in the fifth, when Chalea Clemmons hit a home run to make the score 2-1. Wilson added an insurance run in the seventh and got the win despite being outhit 6-3.
Warhurst was 3-for-3 at the plate, including a double. Murray added a double and a walk, while O’Neal also drew a free pass. Tiffin had a hit and a stolen base and was hit by a pitch. Logan reached base as well by being hit by a pitched ball.
Warhurst pitched all seven innings and struck out five while throwing 115 pitches. She walked four, and only one of Wilson’s three runs were earned.
Russellville is scheduled to return to the field March 28, when the Lady Golden Tigers travel to Austin to take on the Black Bears.
