Club Chronicles: Cultura sponsors bean dinner fundraiser
The Cultura Garden Club held its Feb. 12 meeting at Calvary Baptist Church. Refreshments with a Valentine’s Day theme were served by co-hostesses Debbie Nale and Judy Baker.
Sherry James presented the program on the 130th Rose Parade that she and her husband attended. The Rose Parade is an annual parade held in Pasadena, Calif., on New Year’s Day. It is produced by the non-profit Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association and includes flower-covered floats, marching bands and equestrian units. This year’s theme was “The Melody of Life,” which featured 44 floats, 20 equestrian units with approximately 400 horses and 21 marching bands.
Sherry shared pictures from the parade. This was an event she and her husband have wanted to attend for many years, and she said it was a wonderful experience.
The institute, “Diseases of Roses,” was given by Martha Sibley. Roses are one of the most popular and versatile flowering shrubs grown. Most roses require a lot of care to grow and bloom properly. One of the most common causes of failure with roses is poor disease control. Members were briefed on some methods in caring for and treating roses to prevent diseases.
Final plans for the club’s fundraiser were discussed. The Bean Dinner – beans, cornbread, slaw and brownie – will be held this Thursday at the A.W. Todd Centre from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The meal cost is $8, and it’s either eat in or carry out. All proceeds will be used for club projects, such as downtown beautification, scholarships and other community projects.
