Red Bay teams to host area tourney
The Red Bay boys and girls basketball teams both clinched the opportunity to host the area tournament last week with big area wins against Sulligent, Winston County and Addison.
Girls
Red Bay 60, Addison 44
A big second half lifted the Red Bay Tigers past the Addison Bulldogs 60-44 last week. Red Bay led Addison 13-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs battled back to tie the game 26-26 at halftime. Red Bay, however, outscored Addison 34-18 in the second half to get the win.
Mallori Miller led Red Bay with 21 points. Miller hit four of her five three-pointers in the first half. Macy Faulkner followed Miller with 17 points, 14 of those coming in the second half. Reagan Kuykendall added 10 points, and Destiny McCollister, Lila Blackburn and Cassidy Kuykendall scored four points each.
Red Bay 64, Sulligent 33
Miller scored 20 points to lead Red Bay past Sulligent last week 64-33. The Tigers took a quick 16-7 first-quarter lead and led 28-18 at halftime. Red Bay outscored the Blue Devils 16-6 in the third quarter to take a 44-24 lead into the fourth quarter.
Reagan Kuykendall added 16 points for Red Bay, followed by Faulkner with 13 points. Lila Blackburn and Kassidy Kuykendall scored four points each. McCollister finished the game with three points, Kaylee Markham two points and Makenzi Hester two points.
Red Bay 44, Winston County 25
Red Bay took control early in an area game against the Winston County Yellow Jackets and came away with an easy 44-25 win.
Red Bay outscored Winston County 15-5 in the first quarter and 12-3 in the second quarter to take a 27-8 halftime lead. Although the Yellow Jackets outscored the Tigers in the second half, it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome the first-half deficit.
Reagan Kuykendall led Red Bay with 15 points, eight of which came in the first quarter. Faulkner and Miller followed with 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Cassidy Kuykendall added five points, Madisyn Hester two points and Makenzi Hester one point.
Boys
Red Bay 54, Addison 43
A big fourth quarter lifted the Red Bay Tigers past the Addison Bulldogs last week 54-43. The Tigers, minus one of their leading scorers Gath Weatherford, outscored Addison 21-10 in the final quarter to break a 33-33 tie and win the area contest.
Red Bay jumped out to a 15-9 first-quarter lead, but Addison outscored Red Bay 17-10 in the second quarter to take a 21-20 halftime lead. Red Bay outscored Addison 8-7 in the third quarter to tie the game.
Clay Allison and Braden Ray led Red Bay with 13 points each. Allison scored nine of his points in the fourth quarter, going four of five from the free-throw line. Ray scored seven of his points in the first quarter.
Tanner Hamilton and Colton Corum scored six points each. Lane Shewbart added five points, and Jalen Vinson grabbed four points. Noah Brewer and Arden Hamilton had two points each. Alex Kennedy contributed one point.
Red Bay 42, Sulligent 39
The Red Bay Tigers barely avoided their first area loss of the year this past week following a porous second. The Tigers scored nine points in the second half against the Blue Devils but were able to hand on to a 42-39 win.
Red Bay led Sulligent 12-10 after one quarter. The Tigers put some distance between themselves and the Blue Devils in the second quarter outscoring Sulligent 21-8 to take a 33-18 halftime lead. Sulligent fought back into the game in the third quarter, outscoring Red Bay 14-3 to make the score 36-32 going into the final period of play.
Weatherford and Allison led Red Bay with 13 points and 12 points respectively. Brewer and Ray added five points each. Vinson, Tanner Hamilton and Arden Hamilton scored two points each. Shewbart chipped in one point in the win.
Red Bay 57, Winston County 28
The Red Bay tigers wrapped up the home court advantage in the area tournament with an easy 57-28 win over the Winston County Yellow Jackets.
Red Bay led 29-14 at the end of the first half. The Tigers scored 24 points in the third quarter to take a secure lead into the final period of play.
The Tigers spread the ball around, with 20 players getting in the scoring column, led by Corum with 10 points. Allison and Weatherford scored nine points. Vinson and Hunter Bays added eight points. Arden Hamilton had five points, and Shewbart had four points. Brewer, Tanner Hamilton and Ray scored two points each.
B-varsity boys
The Red Bay B-varsity boys team scored wins last week as well. Red Bay defeated Sulligent 44-35, with Alex Kennedy leading the Tigers with 11 points. Red Bay also beat Winston County 39-29. Again, Kennedy led the way with 11 points.
