Programs keep library busy

Last week the library premiered our non-traditional item collection. Lynn Winters of Haleyville taught a cake decorating class using one of the cake pans available for checkout at the library. The class was an astounding success, and we look forward to hosting more classes in the future.

Some of the pans available for checkout include seasonal items like ghosts, scarecrows and turkeys. We also have character pans like Elmo, Strawberry Shortcake and Thomas the Train. Feel free to stop by the library and borrow a pan for your special occasion or just for the love of cake.

Friday the library will be holding its monthly Pre-K story time. If you haven’t called to register, please do so by calling 256-332-1535. This fall we will be reading the old fairy tales of our childhood with stories like Jack and the Beanstalk and the Princess and the Pea. We would love to have you and your little ones to attend.

Saturday the library is celebrating Hispanic Heritage month with displays provided by the Franklin County Extension office, games, guest speakers and traditional samplings. Our library assistant Perla has done a wonderful job of putting together an authentic and interactive set of activities. The library will also be premiering our newly-expanded Spanish collection.

Taylor Reeder from the Alabama Cooperative Extension Office will be teaching a three-week fall gardening series this month. Classes start Oct. 17 at 10:30 a.m. She always does an amazing job, and we look forward to having her at the library again this fall.

Join us Oct. 20 for some Halloween fun! The library will be hosting the 6th Annual Zombie Walk. We have a professional makeup team to get you zombie ready, and there will be various activities throughout the day to make the wait more enjoyable, such as story time, trivia, and karaoke. The parade starts at the intersection of Lawrence and Jackson at 6 p.m., so even if acting like a zombie isn’t your thing, feel free to come on out and watch the fun.

The library is currently accepting volunteer applications. If you have community service hours to fulfill for National Honor Society or Junior Leadership or even if you just like to help out, we would love to hear from you.
